In livestock such as cattle, pigs, and poultry, adding an appropriate amount of vitamin A to their feed can help maintain the normal structure and function of the eye tissue. For example, in chickens, sufficient vitamin A in the diet can improve their ability to see in low – light conditions, which is especially important for their natural foraging behavior during dawn and dusk.
When it comes to formulating feed, we often use retinyl acetate or retinyl palmitate, which are stable forms of vitamin A. These forms are easily absorbed by animals and can effectively increase the vitamin A levels in their bodies. The recommended dosage of vitamin A varies depending on the species, age, and physiological state of the animals. For dairy cows, the typical addition rate is around 10,000 – 20,000 IU per kg of dry matter in the feed.
2. Carotenoids
Carotenoids are a group of pigments that are widely found in plants and have powerful antioxidant properties. Among them, lutein and zeaxanthin are particularly important for animal vision. These carotenoids accumulate in the macula of the eye, where they help filter harmful blue light and protect the retina from oxidative stress.
In fish farming, adding carotenoids to the feed can improve the visual acuity of fish. For instance, salmonids can benefit from a diet rich in astaxanthin, a type of carotenoid. Astaxanthin not only enhances the color of the fish but also promotes better eye development and function. Increased visual ability helps fish to better locate food, avoid predators, and find suitable mates in their aquatic environment.
In terms of poultry, lutein and zeaxanthin from sources like marigold extracts can be added to the feed. These carotenoids can improve the egg yolk color and also have positive effects on the eye health of the laying hens. The recommended addition level of lutein in poultry feed is usually around 20 – 50 mg per kg of feed.
3. Omega – 3 Fatty Acids
Omega – 3 fatty acids, especially eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are essential for maintaining the normal physiological function of the eyes. These fatty acids are the main components of the cell membrane of the retinal photoreceptor cells. They can improve the fluidity and flexibility of the cell membrane, thereby enhancing the signal transduction ability of the photoreceptor cells.
In cats, DHA is particularly important for their vision. Since cats cannot synthesize enough DHA in their bodies, it needs to be supplemented through the diet. A diet rich in omega – 3 fatty acids can improve cats’ night vision and visual field. In addition, in horses, omega – 3 fatty acids can also help protect the eyes from inflammation and oxidative damage, which is beneficial for maintaining good vision.
We usually add omega – 3 fatty acids in the form of fish oil or algae oil in feed production. The addition rate of omega – 3 fatty acids in cat food is generally around 0.5% – 1.5%, while in horse feed, it can range from 0.2% – 0.8% depending on the horse’s activity level and overall health.
4. Minerals
Certain minerals are also important for animal vision. Zinc is one of them. Zinc is involved in the synthesis of vitamin A – binding proteins and is necessary for the normal function of retinal enzymes. A zinc deficiency can lead to impaired dark adaptation in animals.
Selenium is another essential mineral. It acts as an antioxidant in combination with vitamin E, protecting the eye tissues from oxidative damage. In sheep and goats, selenium supplementation can enhance their overall immune function and eye health.
When adding minerals to the feed, we need to ensure the right balance. For example, the addition level of zinc in pig feed is usually around 50 – 100 mg per kg of feed, while selenium is typically added at a rate of 0.1 – 0.3 mg per kg.
5. Taurine
Taurine is an amino – acid – like compound that is crucial for the vision of many animals, especially cats and dogs. In cats, taurine deficiency can lead to retinal degeneration, which may eventually result in blindness. Cats cannot synthesize taurine efficiently on their own, so it must be provided through the diet.
In dog food, although dogs can synthesize taurine to some extent, adding extra taurine can still have positive effects on their eye health, especially for breeds that are prone to certain eye diseases.
The recommended taurine content in cat food is around 0.1% – 0.2%, while in high – quality dog food, the addition level can be around 0.05% – 0.1%.
